2012 NFL Power Rankings: Week 5

I decided to get rid of the players of the week for each team. I just do not have the free time to do this blog as much as I used to. I want to make sure I at least get my Power Rankings out before the Thursday night game is played. I haven't been able to do that yet. Enjoy, late once again.
----------

1. (1) Houston Texans (4-0)
Week 4: Defeated Houston Texans 38-14
Week 5: @ New York Jets (2-2)

The Texans are a machine right now. Matt Schaub is very efficient, the running game wears down defenses and the defense is playing at a very high level and allowing very few points. A wild comeback attempt by the Broncos not withstanding, Houston has blown out everyone they have played. There is nothing the Texans are not doing well so far this year.

----------

2. (2) Atlanta Falcons (4-0)
Week 4: Defeated Carolina Panthers 30-28
Week 5: @ Washington Redskins

What an amazing drive by Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Drives like that are what define championship seasons. Insert other cliched sports talk. The Falcons offense continues to play at an extremely high level, as defenses simply cannot stop the passing attack of Ryan and company. When Michael Turner produces like that, this offense is pretty much unstoppable.

----------

3. (3) San Francisco 49ers (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated New York Jets 34-0
Week 5: vs. Buffalo Bills (2-2)

The 49ers bounced back in a big way after a tough loss to the Vikings, completely dominating the Jets in every facet of the game. Backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick had more rushing yards then the entire Jets team.

----------

4. (9) Chicago Bears (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated Dallas Cowboys 34-18
Week 5: @ Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3)

The Bears are playing some tremendous football right now. The defense is playing at a very high level, intercepting Tony Romo five times after beating Sam Bradford into submission the previous week. Even though all three could wear out their welcomes eventually, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte make a very good trio on offense. There is good balance on this team right now.

----------

5. (4) Baltimore Ravens (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated Cleveland Browns 23-16
Week 5: @ Kansas City Chiefs (1-3)

The Ravens have won 13 straight home games and look like the class of the AFC North. The passing game continues to excel, and the defense is playing well enough without their best player, although the secondary is struggling pretty badly without a legit pass rush. Baltimore is once again a legit Super Bowl contender.

----------

6. (6) Arizona Cardinals (4-0)
Week 4: Defeated Miami Dolphins 24-21
Week 5: @ St. Louis Rams (2-2)

The Cardinals had by far their worst game of the season against the Dolphins but still managed to pull out the win. That is what good teams do. Cornerback William Gay was absolutely torched by Brian Hartline all day long. I still don't like the offensive line or running game at all long term but 4-0 is 4-0.

----------

7. (7) New England Patriots (2-2)
Week 4: Defeated Buffalo Bills 52-28
Week 5: vs. Denver Broncos (2-2)
The Patriots were actually down 21-7 in the third quarter then rang up five straight touchdowns in less then ten minutes of game play. Some no name guy named Brandon Bolden came in and dropped 137 yards and a touchdown. There is just so much firepower on this Patriots offense. The defense really concerns me, though. In other words, nothing new in Boston.

----------

8. (8) Green Bay Packers (2-2)
Week 4: Defeated New Orleans Saints (28-27)
Week 5: @ Indianapolis Colts (1-3)

The Packers aren't having that good of a season, but they are 2-2. Green Bay has three straight road games coming up. The last time they played a road game Aaron Rodgers was sacked 8 times in the first half.

----------

9. (12) Denver Broncos (2-2)
Week 4: Defeated Oakland Raiders 37-6
Week 5: @ New England Patriots (2-2)

Peyton Manning looked 10 years younger. All he needed was to play the pathetic Oakland Raiders secondary. Next week's matchup should be fun. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady continue their long time rivalry.

----------

10. (13) Cincinnati Bengals (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated Jacksonville Jaguars 27-10
Week 5: vs. Miami Dolphins (1-3)

It is hard to believe Andy Dalton was drafted one round after Blaine Gabbert. He is by far the better quarterback of the two, and looks like he could even be as good as Cam Newton. Of course, it helps that he has AJ Green to throw to. Green is reaching top five WR status already. He is completely unguardable. Like last year the Bengals are beating the teams they are supposed to beat. If that trend continues they could be 5-1 heading into a game against the Steelers. They play the Dolphins and Browns the next two weeks.

----------

11. (15) Philadelphia Eagles (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated New York Giants 19-17
Week 5: @ Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2)

----------

12. (5) New York Giants (2-2)
Week 4: Lost to Philadelphia Eagles 19-17
Week 5: vs. Cleveland Browns (0-4)

----------

13. (17) San Diego Chargers (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated Kansas City Chiefs 37-20
Week 5: @ New Orleans Saints (0-4)

----------

14. (11) Dallas Cowboys (2-2)
Week 4: Lost to Chicago Bears 34-18
Week 5: Bye

----------

15. (19) Minnesota Vikings (3-1)
Week 4: Defeated Detroit Lions 20-13
Week 5: vs. Tennessee Titans (1-3)

The Vikings are winning games by playing good defense and not turnign the ball over. They have only allowed 18 points per game in a year where scoring is way up. Christian Ponder has not thrown an interception in four games and Adiran Paterson and Percy Harvin are among the best players in the NFL. Minnesota could realistically be 7-3 or 8-2 by the time their bye comes around. After that, though they have to play the Bears twice and the Packers twice, as well as the Texans.

----------

16. (10) Seattle Seahawks (2-2)
Week 4: Lost to St. Louis Rams 19-13
Week 5: @ Carolina Panthers (1-3)

----------

17. (21) Washington Redskins (2-2)
Week 4: Defeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-22
Week 5: vs. Atlanta Falcons (4-0)

----------

18. (22) St. Louis Rams (2-2)
Week 4: Defeated Seattle Seahawks 19-13
Week 5: vs. Arizona Cardinals (4-0)

----------

19. (16) Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2)
Week 4: Bye
Week 5: vs. Philadelphia Eagles (3-1)

----------

20. (25) Miami Dolphins (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Arizona Cardinals 24-21
Week 5: @ Cincinnati Bengals (3-1)

----------

21. (18) New York Jets (2-2)
Week 4: Lost to San Francisco 49ers 34-0
Week 5: vs. Houston Texans (4-0)

----------

22. (14) Buffalo Bills (2-2)
Week 4: Lost to New England Patriots 52-28
Week 5: @ San Francisco 49ers (3-1)

----------

23. (20) Detroit Lions (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Minnesota Vikings 20-13
Week 5: Bye

----------

24. (23) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Washington Redskins 24-22
Week 5: Bye

----------

25. (24) Carolina Panthers (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Atlanta Falcons 30-28
Week 5: vs. Seattle Seahawks (2-2)

----------

26. (28) New Orleans Saints (0-4)
Week 4: Lost to Green Bay Packers 28-27
Week 5: vs. San Diego Chargers (3-1)

----------

27. (31) Indianapolis Colts (1-2)
Week 4: Bye
Week 5: vs. Green Bay Packers (2-2)

----------

28. (32) Cleveland Browns (0-4)
Week 4: Lost to Baltimore Ravens 23-16
Week 5: @ New York Giants

Even though the Browns are 0-4 and have been my last ranked team all season, I cannot put them last. Unlike the other teams behind them that have been blwon out on a weekly basis, the Browns have put up a fight and have been in all the games they have lost. Brandon Weeden has shown some flashes. It will be interesting to see if Cleveland can give him some actual pass catchers before he is past his prime in two years.

----------

29. (30) Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Cincinnati Bengals 27-10
Week 5: vs. Chicago Bears (3-1)

----------

30. (27) Oakland Raiders (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Denver Broncos 37-6
Week 5: Bye

----------

31. (29) Tennessee Titans (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to Houston Texans 38-14
Week 5: @ Minnesota Vikings (3-1)

No team has given up more points then the Titans. In fact, take away their wild week three win against the Lions and they have been outscored 110-37. Tennessee simply is not competitive this season. At least Chris Johnson finally had a good game, but it came during yet another blowout.

----------

32. (26) Kansas City Chiefs (1-3)
Week 4: Lost to San Diego Chargers 37-20
Week 5: vs. Baltimore Ravens (3-1)
