2013 NFL Power Rankings: Week 6

I started with a key statistic, but that got kind of boring halfway through. So here is a very poor effort with my power rankings this week. I promise better next week!

-----

1. Denver Broncos (5-0)
Previous Power Ranking: 2
Week 5 Result: Defeated Dallas Cowboys 51-48
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5)

Key Statistic: The Broncos have scored at least 37 points in every game, and have hit 49, 52 and 51 already this year. They are on pace for 736 points scored, which would absolutely shatter the NFL record of 589 points by the 2007 New England Patriots. In fact, the Broncos would have to average 32.7 points per game to score 590 points on the season.
-----

2. Seattle Seahawks (4-1)
Previous Power Ranking: 1
Week 5 Result: Lost to Indianapolis Colts 24-28
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Tennessee Titans (3-2)

Key Statistic: The Seahawks are second in the NFL in rushing yards. Marshawn Lynch has improved his yards per carry every game this year, culminating with 6.0 yards per rush against the Colts. Russell Wilson has more yards rushing then Darren McFadden, Lamar Miller, Rashard Mendenhall, Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice.

-----

3. New Orleans Saints (5-0)
Previous Power Ranking: 3
Week 5 Result: Defeated Chicago Bears 26-18
Week 6 Matchup: @ New England Patriots (4-1)

Key Statistic: One year after allowing a staggering 7,042 yards, the Saints are on pace to allow only 5,286 yards. New Orleans has only allowed 14.6 points per game through five contests. Much improved defensive play is the main reason the Saints sit at 5-0 on the season.

-----

4. Kansas City Chiefs (5-0)
Previous Power Ranking: 4
Week 5 Result: Defeated Tennessee Titans 26-17
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Oakland Raiders (2-3)

Key Statistic: Kansas City is 5-0 thanks to a dominating defense. Kansas City leads the NFL in points allowed with 11.6 per game. The Chiefs have sacked the quarterback 21 times, also leading the league. They also have 7 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles.

-----

5. San Francisco 49ers (3-2)
Previous Power Ranking: 6
Week 5 Result: Defeated Houston Texans 34-3
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Arizona Cardinals (3-2)

Key Statistic: The 49ers have allowed 188 yards passing per league, which would be second in the NFL. The Niners are back on track, out scoring their opponents by a score of 69-14 the past two weeks.

-----

6. Indianapolis Colts (4-1)
Previous Power Ranking: 9
Week 5 Result: Defeated Seattle Seahawks 34-28
Week 6 Matchup: @ San Diego Chargers (2-3)

Key Statistic: The Colts have dropped a total of 61 points on the two NFC West giants, who have two of the best defenses in the NFL. Andrew Luck has a QB rating of 94.1. It is easy to forget that the future All Pro is only in his second NFL season.

-----

7. New England Patriots (4-1)
Previous Power Ranking: 5
Week 5 Result: Lost to Cincinnati Bengals 13-6
Week 6 Matchup: vs. New Orleans Saints (5-0)

Key Statistic: This was the first time in 52 games that the future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady was unable to find the end zone. The Patriots defense has held opponents to only 14 points per game.

-----

8. Green Bay Packers (2-2)
Previous Power Ranking: 8
Week 5 Result: Defeated Detroit Lions 22-9
Week 6 Matchup: @ Baltimore Ravens (3-2)

Key Statistic: The Packers offense is rolling as usual. It is not a surprise to see Green Bay is ranked fourth in passing yards per game (312.3). The running game, however, has been a revelation. The trio of Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin and James Starks has helped the Packers run for 141 yards per game, fifth best in the NFL.

-----

9. Cincinnati Bengals (3-2)
Previous Power Ranking: 12
Week 5 Result: Defeated New England Patriots 13-6
Week 6 Matchup: @ Buffalo Bills (2-3)

-----

10. Chicago Bears (3-2)
Previous Power Ranking: 7
Week 5 Result: Lost to New Orleans Saints 26-18
Week 6 Matchup: vs. New York Giants (0-5)

Key Statistic: The Bears defense is making big plays again this year. Chicago has two interception returns for touchdowns and 10 forced fumbles. On the down side, they only have 8 sacks. Julius Peppers has yet to get going this season.

-----

Previous Power Ranking: 10
Week 5 Result: Defeated Miami Dolphins 26-23
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Green Bay Packers (2-2)

-----

Previous Power Ranking: 13
Week 5 Result: Lost to Denver Broncos 51-48

-----

14. Houston Texans (2-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 11
Week 5 Result: Lost to San Francisco 49ers 34-3
Week 6 Matchup: vs. St. Louis Rams (2-3)

Key Statistic: The Texans defense has played well this season. They are first in the NFL in yards allowed with only 260 per game. To put that in to perspective, 15 teams have allowed more passing yards then that this year. Houston is first in the NFL with only 134 yards passing given up per game.

-----

Previous Power Ranking: 15
Week 5 Result: Lost to Kansas City Chiefs 26-17

-----

18. Cleveland Browns (3-2)

-----

21. Arizona Cardinals (3-2)

-----

22. Carolina Panthers (1-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 18
Week 5 Result: Lost to Arizona Cardinals 22-6
Week 6 Matchup: @ Minnesota Vikings (1-3)

-----

23. St. Louis Rams (2-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 25
Week 5 Result: Defeated Jacksonville Jaguars 34-20
Week 6 Matchup: @ Houston Texans (2-3)

-----

24. Oakland Raiders (2-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 31
Week 5 Result: Defeated San Diego Chargers 27-17
Week 6 Matchup: @ Kansas City Chiefs (5-0)

-----

25. Minnesota Vikings (1-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 24
Week 5 Result: Bye
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Carolina Panthers (1-3)

-----

26. Buffalo Bills (2-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 22
Week 5 Result: Lost to Cleveland Browns 37-24
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Cincinnati Bengals (3-2)

Key Statistic: The Bills are the league leaders in interceptions thus far with 9. That is impressive considering their Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd has not even played a snap this year.

-----

27. Philadelphia Eagles (2-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 26
Week 5 Result: Defeated New York Giants 36-21
Week 6 Matchup: @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4)

-----

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4)
Previous Power Ranking: 27
Week 5 Result: Bye
Week 6 Matchup: vs. Philadelphia Eagles (2-3)

-----

29. Pittsburgh Steelers (0-4)
Previous Power Ranking: 28
Week 5 Result: Bye
Week 6 Matchup: @ New York Jets

Key Statistic: The Steelers are struggling mightily in several areas, but the most surprising might be four sacks through four games. Pittsburgh is synonomous with getting to the quarterback, so the lack of a pass rush is very surprising.

-----

30. Washington Redskins (1-3)
Previous Power Ranking: 29
Week 5 Result: Bye
Week 6 Matchup: @ Dallas Cowboys (2-3)

-----

31. New York Giants (0-5)
Previous Power Ranking: 30
Week 5 Result: Lost to Philadelphia Eagles 36-21
Week 6 Matchup: @ Chicago Bears (3-2)

Key Statistic: The Giants defense is in shambles. The team has allowed 36 points per game and has only sacked the quarterback five times. The defense has always been based on the ability to get after the quarterback, so if the team struggles in that area, the defense as a whole will be inept.

-----

32. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5)
Previous Power Ranking: 32
Week 5 Result: Lost to St. Louis Rams 34-20
Week 6 Matchup: @ Denver Broncos (5-0)

Key Statistic: The Jaguars are on a historically inept pace. They have allowed the second most points per game (32.6) in the NFL and are the worst scoring team at only 10.2 points per game. That is even after a 20 point "outburst" last week.
